A question about organic milk from grass-fed cows…

This morning I tried some organic milk from Trickling Springs and, while its smell and taste seemed perfectly fine, I was a little concerned about its consistency.  Compared to your average run-of-the-mill milk, this stuff was incredibly thick — more like a heavy cream!  Is this normal, or did I get a bad batch?  IMG_0008


Recipe: Banana Cashew Pancakes

Here is a simple and delicious recipe for Banana Cashew Pancakes. I made them this morning and they were wonderful! I plan on making them again tomorrow and I’ll try to remember to take some photos and post them as well.  (The original idea for this recipe was posted on Twitter by Chrissie Wellington.)

Banana Cashew Pancakes


  • 2 bananas
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp. cashew butter
  • cinnamon (if desired)


  1. Mash bananas and beat in egg.
  2. Add cashew butter and mix.  Set aside.
  3. Preheat pan to medium heat.
  4. Add 1/4 of mixture to pan.
  5. Cook.  Flip.  Cook.
  6. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon, if desired.
  7. Repeat.
  8. Enjoy!

Nutrition (for 4 small pancakes):

Cal: 325, Carbs: 50g, Fat: 13g, Protein: 11g, Chol: 210mg, Sodium: 57mg, Sugars: 26g, Fiber: 6g

Next Race: Spooky Tails & Trails 5K

This weekend, I’ll be participating in the YMCA-sponsored Spooky Tails & Trails 5K at Veteran’s Park in Hamilton, NJ.  It will only be my second event that I’ve ever participated in and I’m a little nervous about the condition of my shins going into it.  I seemed to have pushed myself a little beyond my capabilities the other night and some fairly mean-spirited shin splints followed.

This morning, I did a practice run walk at the park, but had to limit my running to well…just about none as the pain was a little overwhelming.  I’ve deciding to rest for a couple of days and possibly resume my normal walk/run routine on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Urghh!  Damn shin splints!

For the record, here are the results from this morning’s walk:

1km — 7m16s

1 mile — 12m35s

3 miles — 41m51s

5 km — 43m33s

My name is Michael B. (or you may know me as miles_ahead on Twitter) and I am was a certified couch potato!  I’m only 5’5″, but this past summer I managed to let my weight balloon up to 183.5 lbs.!  That was simply not acceptable!

So, as a result, I changed my eating habits (quite dramatically!) and started to exercise much more often and here I am — two months later and 24 lbs. lighter!  But I’m hardly done!  I may have lost the weight, but now I need to actually get fit!
